Recovery for Dual Diagnosis

Denial is an inherent part of the problem in a dual diagnosis - the involved individuals often do not have insight as to the seriousness and the scope of the problem. They need understanding of how hard it is to end an addiction problem and need to receive credit for accomplishments.

There are several different levels of care, including full hospitalizations, partial hospitalizations, and out patient treatment. The need for hospitalization depends on the nature and severity of illness, the associated risk or complication, and personal treatment history. Because both illnesses are treated at the same time, a person needs to be able to take psychiatric medications while undergoing detoxification.

Drug Abuse and AIDS

Behavior associated with drug abuse is now the single largest factor in the spread of HIV infection in the United States. HIV is the Human Immunodeficiency Virus, which causes Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome, or AIDS. AIDS is a condition characterized by a defect in the body's natural immunity to diseases, and individuals who suffer from it are at risk for severe illnesses that are usually not a threat to anyone whose immune system is working properly.
